Design Trends 2007 and 2008
Emerging now is a bold new sense of sophistication and the reinterpretation of
the past by juxtaposing its design elements with surprising textures, scales,
and colors.
The following are the more important and influential trends:
- The love of Luxe
- The Drama of Giant Scale
- The Seductiveness of Surface Ornamentation
- The New Modern
- Focus on the Environment
The Love of Luxe: Consider the popularity of more finely woven chenilles,
double-combed cotton jacquards, silk, sheers, and linen-like sheers. The natural
shimmer and luster of the yarns are considerably more evident. The effect is one
of glistening luxury, refinement and opulence.
The Drama of Giant Scale: This new trend received a big push forward by the
renaissance of the Modern style. It began in fabrics but is so hot that it is
spreading everywhere. Look for simplified traditional motifs, simplified
geometric patterns in very bold, very graphic, and highly contracting color
schemes. These will be printed and woven. Examples of this are huge damasks,
huge awning stripes and huge interlocking geometrics, such as latticework
patterns, hound tooth patterns and chevron patterns. The placement of the
pattern on a bed, sofa, or a window treatment slightly off-center will make it
appear playful and interesting.
The Seductiveness of Surface Ornamentation: This is the direct extension of the
luxurious style trend. Surface shimmer and luster are paramount. Embroidery of
all kinds, in all sorts of materials, and in all sorts of textures is expanding.
This revitalizes crushed plissed and pin tucked fabrics. Appliqued patterns that
are re-embroidered are very new. This reinforces the popularity of trims,
passementeries, and fringes on everything.
The New Modern: This style evolved indirectly from the Retro Contemporary look
that became such a force about 3-4 years ago. The main design element of this
style is the playful manipulation of traditional design elements creating a
fresh new look. Think of traditional furniture, accessories, bed and window
treatments with fabrics in bright colors with a graphic, modern look. This style
is very reminiscent of the signature design style of mid century modern
designer, Billy Baldwin.
Focus on the Environment: Back to Nature. The growing trend towards sustainable
products continues to push natural, earthy, hues to the forefront. Yellows and
blues, leaf-like greens, along with organic browns combine to bring the outdoors
in. As a subtle accent color, rust or copper-like metallics are also being used.
Bathrooms and bedrooms are perfect places to incorporate natural colors.
